Hurricane Katrina Relief Benefit to Aid the United Negro
College Fund: On Tuesday, September 27, 2005,
the Go-Go Coalition, Inc. hosted "Locking Down the City" with
a benefit that raised funds for the United Negro Colege Fund's
(UNCF) Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. On that
evening, five concerts took place simultaneously throughout
the Washington, D.C. area with multiple bands at each
location. Participating venues were Bud's Restaurant
& Nightclub, Kili's Cafe, and Club Levels in DC; and
Safari Steakhouse and Tradewinds in Prince George's County,
MD. Participating bands included Experience Unlimited
(EU), Ayre Rayde, Sounds of 1-Luv, Petworth Band, L!ssen
Grew^p, Publicity, After Hours, 4-Sho Band, Lady Rhythm, Whop
N Em, Mambo Sauce, Fatal Attraction, Backyard, Junkyard,
Uncalled 4 Band, Dynasty and Rare Essence. See photos from the events here.
UNCF member schools Xavier and Dillard University in New
Orleans, and Tougaloo College in Mississippi sustained
considerable damage by Hurricane Katrina. UNCF has
established a Hurricane Relief Fund specifically for displaced
students at these institutions. All donations go
directly to assisting the students with relocating to other
schools by providing tuition, room and board, fees, and books,
and it also covers any gaps in funding (not profided by
federal assistance) to cover their educational needs.
For information on the UNCF and this specific fund, contact
Francene T. Walker, CFRE, National Director of Individual and
Planning Giving at the United Negro College Fund at (703)
205-3569.
